I have looked and called a dozen dealers and all the Micron etc etc slip on systems are ALL GONE.

So what is a third gener to do????

1.) If anyone has one that will fit I would look at that first.
2.) How different is the 4th generation slip on?
3.) If I have to go with a muffler and custom exhaust mid-pipe and I can handle that but what should I look for in a muffler that would fit close on om 1991?

I want it to sound like my 68 Firebird or close :caked:

Most people now fit a 4th gen. front pipe, you can get a can to fit that headpipe.I started making my own can late last winter and will finish it this year.

Vance and Hines SS2 slip on is what I had on the 93 I used to own.

You may have to call Parts Unlimited.

go to exoticpsortbike.com. You will have to search a bit, but I think they still have some listing for 3rd gens. Other than that, order one for a 4th gen and have an exhaust shop make your mid pipe for you. Thats what I did for my 93.

What did you buy? You have pic? How does the rear mount vary from third to fourth generation?

Ok there are lots of mufflers out there sold for other bikes. Would there be an issue using one for a CBR900 or other 750cc +- engines? I am not all that familar with 4 stroke motorcycles but when I bought my mufflers for my Firebird they were generic and all I needed to worry about were sound and fit. Wouldn't it be the same for motorcycles as longs as I am not messing with the header pipes????

3rd Gens have a flange type connector and use a seal at the connection like most cars have at the manifold to exhaust areas and thats the problem, most bikes have the pipe that will slide over one another so you cann't use another bikes midpipe and modify it.You can have a midpipe made and bent up to fit any muffler you want but to do it,it would be easier to take the bike and muffler to an automotive muffler shop and get them to make one to fit your application out of stainless

Are you talking about a "donut"? It crushes so there is a seal? Anyone know if the flange is available from anyone?

The same qestion is??? Will a muffler off an VFR800 or the one of a CBR 900 work with the proper midpipe. Both of these bikes have mufflers still available.

Is stainless necessary? THe factory is steel and I know I can get hi temp paint to stick also.

No its not a crush type donut, take the 3 bolts,1 at footpeg area 2 at flange for your muffler off and you'll see it.Yes you could use steel but the stuff at a muffler shop is crap so i would recomend stainless

Been there done that. Micron will not manufacture them anymore so thats a no go. Did find Laser setup for $340 but they will only do carbon fiber look and I dont like that look at all. Waiting for email direct from Laser but most mfg have snubbed me so far.

Got to be easier than this. Been hitting ebay for Honda big cc CBR and VFR 800 sets and have my own mid-pipe made.

banshee, here is the best pic I have of the D&D I bought off ebay. As for mounting points, the only difference between 3rd and 4th gen is at the header. Honda changed the end of the header so that it was no longer a swing away connection (meaning no more ball end by the right rearset). an Exhaust shop can make you a mid pipe to go from the header to the muffler itself, then it is just bolt it up.

Go with a 4th gen pipe and get a Staintune for it; gets rid of the lunchbox under the bike and you can fit a centerstand

After talking to many a dealer and mechanic what I thought at first is true. The muffler is generic except for the way it connects to the mid-pipe. Just like a car the performance will not vary that much. If you were looking for all out performance you would by a race system with the complete exhaust. In Europe they sell replacement mufflers with standard 2" inlet and you match to a mid-pipe. Nothing personal to all the dealers out there but $300 to $1000 for a slip on is a rip off. My opinion that is.

    Pontiac,

To answer the question you've all ready answered yourself, yes it doesn't make much difference to use another can in most cases (I avoid absolutes!).

I've put many cans sold/advertised for one bike on to others. Currently I have a set of leo vinces for a 6gen vtec on my 4gen. OK, that's not a drastic example but I've done many others.

For a 3gen, I'd get a hi-mount staintune. They sound great and look period.
