The Snow Princess, Ice Queen, Pearl Goddess, still struggling for a name for her, (submissions welcome!) comes home from the dealer tomorrow (one more sleep!). After all, it is forecasted to be a balmy 3 degrees centigrade which around here is enough to go riding for those of us suffering from critically acute PMS.

Up until last fall I was pretty content with my then mount an ’04 Shadow Spirit. We’d been going together for over three years & 40K klicks and she had been nothing but loyal to me through good and bad. The riding was fine but lacked that certain spice that had been there in the early going. Not her fault. Like most relationships we even started to hang out with like minded folks and joined them for their weekly rides in the non-snow months (there’s about 2 of these here but not necessarily consecutive).

You know how it goes. You lock eyes with a pearl white hottie across a crowded bike show floor. You saunter over to check her out. Coyly let your hand stroke her headlights, maybe pat her factory installed seat, check out her tail and within a couple of heartbeats you’re lost. Things then conspire to cloud your normally clear headed thinking. Your best riding buddy out of nowhere up and leaves his gorgeous but frankly a little on the heavy side Nomad for a far younger, sleeker and sexier VStrom and proceeds to leave you in his mirrors as he dances with her through your usual fall ride through NY/PA. On that same ride a Pearl Black rolls up to the room next to yours in Watkins Glen and you listen to the rider describe his in nothing less than fulsome terms. You check out websites and download thousands of pages of glowing reviews. Then Peter Egan gets one.

You call your pimp (dealer) and he just so happens to have a new ’06 PW just sitting on the floor. He’ll shave the price and offer you a decent trade and it’s all over before you can say divorce lawyer.

I called my old bike the Black/Pearl because it was black and pearl. The VFR is an Interceptor of course. Each of these names garnered much approval from my children who are huge fans of Pirates of the Carribean. For those of you who are not fans...these are names of ships in the movie.
