Well folks it didn't last long. Barely got a year on my 8th gen and some asshat decides it's better to drive under the influence than enjoy the fruits of riding. That was my 5th VFR (2 stolen, 3 wrecked) is it time to hang up my spurs and condemn myself to a steel cage or should I give it one last shot?

I hope you are doing okay, that was a bad one. I have not been through the same accidents and stolen bike thing (knock on wood) but I have noticed how much more dangerous it is to ride a motorcycle then it was when I started. (I am 53 and been riding since 16ish).

I have altered my riding to mostly outside the city limits in areas that seem more manageable by the rider. Drunk drivers are the worst but so many cell phone operators, map readers, or people just plain driving with their heads up their butt are abound. (EVEN motorcycle riders)

I have bought a high dollar motorcycle trailer that I use just to avoid high traffic situations in major cities. I now mostly trailer to the good riding areas, ride and trailer home. I too ride with a camera for just the reason shown in your video. In my area they will run you over then leave and nobody saw anything.

I am originally from Long Beach Ca, but currently live in the Houston area of Texas so I know what your dealing with.

If I were you I would not hang up my spurs but would alter riding venues to account for the growing number of lawless drivers surrounding us. Everyone always says to us "I know your a save rider but its the other guy I worry about" . That is more true today then ever.

That Sucks!!! I hope your okay and that asshat was charged/ arrested accordingly. Maybe take some time off riding & let your brain decompress. That way you make an irrational decision either way. After some time off you'll know when or if it's time to ride again.

    Best wishes!

I just saw the post on Instagram regarding your injuries. I wish you a speedy recovery!

I'm right over the VTB in San Pedro. I'm also just slightly younger than you (49) and also have been riding since I was 16. It's just so many hazards out there now, especially those damn cell phones, and the older we get the harder to bounce back. Ever since that hit & run in 2010, I never EVER ride without a camera. I actually got into the habit of starting the camera before starting the bike.

Fractured tail bone and broken shoulder. Going to be out about 8 to 12 weeks. At least now I'll have a good excuse why my golf game sucks.

She didn't swerve, slow down or react at all. She stopped about 100 feet away an only because my bike was wedged under her car. Full vid shows she didn't exit the car for about 3 minutes even though her air bag didn't deploy. Swas taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of DUI

I hear ya. It is about managing risk. I love to ride ...but not at all cost. Looking back I am lucky to be here with some of the bone headed riding I have done in the name of fun. Over the years we can all probably tell about a friend that has lost their life riding just like we do all the time.

When Dr's nickname us "organ donors" and all good road manners are gone, it is quickly approaching the time when we will all have to evaluate if we have too much to loose to continue riding.

Personal choice, that should start with asking yourself what happens to the one's you love if your gone? Of coarse everyone will always say..."Well at least he died doing what he loved"

I hope you heal up well and quickly. And I don't mean to criticize, but why were you riding down the middle of that driveway, and why didn't you pull to the far right when you saw the car coming?

I'm not saying it's your fault by any means, but it sure looked like it could have been avoided. Of course she also could have been fixated on your headlight and run in to you no matter what. However it all boils down to "woulda, coulda, shoulda".

I have a GoPro and it has such a wide angle lens it is difficult to see at first glance the exact positioning without having something to use as a reference like a white or yellow line dividing the lanes. It is easy enough to see that the car is in the middle and drifting left toward the bike, though.

^^^^^^^^^Yeah, I was mostly going by the fact that the bike was over the visible center line pulling into the driveway, and it never looked like he moved back over to the right much. The car was definitely in the middle of the driveway, but it looked like there was a ton of room to the right to move over to and time to do it. But it's all second guessing, and after-the-fact reasoning.

Yeah, if most accidents happen close to home, I'd move. In fact, we ARE moving - to the east coast!

    Cheers,

Hope your o.k. but it looks like you where on the wrong side of that line in the lot. I'm sure the driver was probably looking down at his or her phone of course smdh otherwise how could they not see you. That's crazy to see this happen in real time like that. God Bless and dust ya self off and get another VFR because it's seems tough enough to keep you alive.

Sorry to hear of this and your injuries. Nobody wants to be in an accident. I know you don't want to hear this, but it appears like you had more than adequate time (and TONS of room) for you to swerve. I cannot understand why you did not. It almost seemed like you were playing chicken with her....like "I'm not moving, so I am going to hog the lane and let you run me over if you don't move." I cannot tell you how many times that I have swerved to avoid a car/truck coming directly at me in my lane. I would not be here today if I just rode directly at them (or stopped in front of them) hoping for them to move. That could have been any inattentive person that did the same thing, they did not need to be drinking. It really was a combination of both of your faults. Maybe time for another MSF course? I just want all of us safe. Unless you speed up your reaction time somehow (also based on your other get-offs), I think it might not be a bad idea for you to consider hanging it up. I would evaluate my riding ability just the same if it was me doing as you did.

It looks like she accelerated towards you.

Kinda hard to process and avoid if that's the case.
