    Hey all:

90 vfr 750 replacement of thermostat and thermo unit under way, will the carbs really need to come off as the manual suggests? Are there any other services that I should perform while I've got the hood open?

I was under the impression the Themostat was under the right side mid fairing. Let me look in my service manual.

My manual says fuel tank and carbs come off, just needed to know if it's a six pack job, or a case. Wonder if it can be snuck in there somehow without pulling carbs, as I've done that before and it wasn't fun.

I think it could be done without carb remove, I lifted today my tank and removed the filter and there looks like it could be enough space for the job.. But its not so hard job to remove the carbs once you are there..

You can do the job without removing the carbs if you have small hands. and you would have to disconnect the radiator hose that goes from the thermo unit to the right side of the radiator. Even then, the thermostat unit is hard to maneuver. I've had 2 93's apart so I'm going based on the tear down and reassembly.

In the end, it may be overall easier just to lift the carbs off.

What on earth is a Thermo unit? I know what a thermostat is but what is that? Do these bikes have some sort of heat exchanger? Or are you guys just talking about the switch that turns the fan on?

Why are you re-placing it? Is it leaking? Mine is still original with 78,000 miles on it. If you pull your carburetors, you may have to re-synchronize them too, just some food for thought, (and synchronizing them carbs sucks, unless your a dentist and used to working with a mirror looking at up-side down shit!!) thats just me though...

The temp gauge wasn't working and I determined that the thermo unit was at fault because the gauge passed the ground test. I have replaced the thermostat too because I don't want to have to go back in that deep again any time soon, and money grows on trees in new jersey. Now my temp gauge works and I have peace of mind that the thermostat is new too. Fresh coolant and oil change and it's as if I'm riding a new bike again.

I did pull the carbs to do the job and didn't end up syncing them, seems to be running perfectly. Carbs came off and on very easily, but I should probably check sync anyway, I have the tool.

Now I just wait to see if my source for an OEM solo seat cowl comes through. That would be sweet.
