Bought this pair of Gen 1's last January in non-running condition. Both were nice and low mile (11K and 8800). Here they were at the last owner's place:

Both bikes got new tires (3 of 4 anyway) new batteries, full fluid flushes, valve adjustments, one got new CCTs, fork seals, etc etc etc. About $1000 in parts between the two bikes, and probably 60-80 hours of my labor. One had been sitting since 06 and the other since??

#1, the really clean low mile unit sold last month. It was a real beauty, about a 9 out 10 cosmetically.

#2 sold a few days ago. This one was about a 6 or 7 cosmetically, but ran well and was still low miles.

It wasn't quite as pretty in person as in the picture, but still real nice for the age.

I thought I might keep one of the bikes when I bought them, but riding them, and working on them, and reading so much here, I really lost interest in a Gen 1 in a hurry. Neat for nostalgia, but really a mediocre bike with more than its share of design issues. I say that with affection though. In the end, it was a fun project and that's why I bought them.

Gen 2's are where my interest lies and I'll be looking for one before next winter (put 35K on one back in the day).

I've got a Gen 1 service manual I'll send to someone for the cost of shipping!

My Gen 2 has run flawless since I restored it about 9k miles ago, the wheel upgrade and steering damper made it into a whole new bike. I plan on putting many miles on mine it's a keeper, my Blackbird doesn't get much use now.

    Hank,
My guess is that you want one that is completely stock.

Not necessarily, as I plan to upgrade suspension etc. I'd really like to fit up an FI 800 engine too. I haven't put any time into looking at how difficult that would be, but with the right tools and some time and cash anything is possible.
The ideal candidate would have a complete (repairable) body and a shot or missing engine.
