I'm looking for a tail bag of rectangular brief-case shape that would hold a laptop (app. 13" x 10") BUT also have expandability for touring, as in a zpper around it to allow it to triple or so it's height. I didn't want a "roll" type or the "big cube"
Anyone use or seen something like this? Thanks.

I have a large tank bag from CARGO-Endurance that can fit my helmet. You can zip off the magnetic base and mount it as a tail bag. I have used it for both. I also have the sport panner Saddlemen saddle bags & they have a nice tail bag that I am thinking about getting.

I use this one. It's expandable. Works well. Only got this one because it was the only one my local dealer had that was big enough when I needed one in a hurry.

Thanks guys for the input. I have ordered one of these...we'll see how she goes. I like the idea that I can normally use it as a tailbag, but it has magnets to stick on the tank if needed. Local dealer gave 15% off retail.

What kind of water repellantcy (is that even a word?) do these soft bags have? I don't want to blow 1600 bucks on hard bags, but I soaked stuff if cought in the rain isn't a good scenario either.

I have yet to find any nylon, or any other type of bag, other than the hard cases that would be waterproof. Most of them come with a nylon "waterproof" cover that does a decent job of keeping the fog out but that is about it. Two options I use are to place everything inside a green garbage bag inside the tank bag, or wrap a green garbage bag around the outside of the tank bag before you put that flimsey nylon shell over top. The nylon shell will hold the garbage bag in place and everything will stay dry. Both have worked 100% for me, even during a two day ride in the rain to California.

The First Gear tail bag and the Cortech Tail bag are the nicest, IMO. They are clean and sleek on the bike. Both come with rain covers. Most of these bags are Cordura or whatever you want to call it (ballistic nylon, etc) They are water repellant TO A POINT, but will eventually get soaked.

I had a Cortech Sport tail bag. It fit my laptop and a weekend's worth of clothes and toiletries. Very easy on and off the bike. Four bungee hooks with nylon hook ends. The cords pack underneath the bag when not in use, so it looks like a nice carry case off the bike.

How do you like the Saddleman saddle bags? I sent them an email asking about how waterproof they were and this is what I got:

So I am wondering how valid their claim is, can you report on that?

Two solid days of torrential down pour going down and two coming back. My stff stayed dry. But I did not rely on the water repellency of the gear. I lined the insides of these bags with plastic garbage bags. It is so simple to do, I don't know why anyone would not do so anyways. That is Mt Shasta California in the back ground from a rest area on the I-5

BTW. This is the normal forcast for where I live:
