I recently became the proud owner of a 03 VFR and ride her every chance I get. I rode her to my physics lab today even. Wanting to make sure she was safe I locked the wheel and as an added measure threw on a disc lock(you can probably see where this is going). I go to leave, pop her into first, slip the clutch and away I go for about a foot. "STUPID" I know. Nearest I can tell warped rotor and a broken caliper bracket. I'm sure when she gets to the mechanic in the morning he'll find other things too. Rough estimates $ wise, how much is this moment of stupidity going to cost me?

Welcome to the forum ya coward!

Yikes....sorry to hear about your mishap. It it hard for me to say how much unless I got to see pictures of the damage inflicted. It depends on how hard you hit it as well. This is too late but, I always have a "reminder" florescent orange coil that attaches from my disk lock to my handlebars. In my mind, I think that disc locks are pretty much a waste of time. If you bike gets stolen, it gets carried away and thrown into a van.

I had a few close calls with a disk lock.
Get the coil wire to the ignition key as a reminder to remove it.

Well, only you can tell if the rotor is bent. At the very least, if you hit it hard enough, it probably could have bent the rotor a little. Hopefully, you did not damage the caliper, or the mounts. I doubt it, with that slow speed, but ya never know.

Did you ride the bike home? Was it making any funny noises? Does it roll forward and backwards without jamming up? Take two of these and call derStuka in the morning:doh:

Stuka was just wanting to see the pics so that he could point and laugh, Just kidding. Absentminded things happen to the best of us.

Try dumping your bike over in a parking lot just sitting there waiting for your wife! On a busy street in the middle of campus. :asshat: That was me.

Maybe it won't cost much. Good Luck.

Update on the my bike, seeing as how I bent a rotor and Honda charges $350 for an OEM rotor and I could switch to EBC rotors for $400, I now have EBC rotors. New rotors require new brakes pads so she is wearing Dunlop pads. At least some good is coming out of this.

Sounds like a nice upgrade to the brakes. I guess the one bonus.
Since I am older and getting more and more forgetful I've found myself devising mor e and more reminders. I use a simple reminder when I use a disc lock. I forget what it was. Just kidding. It works for me and may help others.
I got a small earth magnet and stuck it over the key hole on the disc lock so that I couldn't insert the key without removing it. To use the disc lock I had to remove the magnet. When I removed the magnet I stuck it over the ignition switch key hole. When I came back to the bike and if someone hadn't loaded it in a truck, I could not insert the igniton key without removing the magnet. My memory was good enough that I knew the disc lock was on. So...remove the disc lock, take the magnet off the ignition, put it back over the keyhole on the disc lock, stow it and get ready to ride. Now what did I do with my helmet.
