For the 2+ years that I have had my Y2K VFR, the speedo goes crazy this time of year. I.E., crusining along and everything is normal; and then about 20 minutes into the ride, the needle starts jumping erratically. All other guages appear to work fine. Give it a month or two, just long enough to get used to riding w/o a speedo, and everything goes back to normal. For the 3rd time, I'm stumped. I checked the little speedometer gear near the left peg and took a DMM to the battery. The gear is clean, and voltage is normal. I bought it with 8k miles and am closing in on 22k. The original owner claims he never had a problem. Anyone have an idea?
it could be your regulator for me, erratic speedometer behavior was the foreshadowing event for regulator/rectifier failure. this is not fun, especially if you're miles from home. get your rec/reg diagnosed either at a shop or use a multimeter to diagnose your charging system.
I am having this same problem, but it is consistant. Btw, it took almost 2 years before someone answered the origonal post. I have a great PDF for troubleshooting electrical systems. Sounds like its time to use it again. http://www.electrosport.com/Images/fault_finding.pdf
