2004 VFR runs fine to work today. After work, I put the key in and no customary whine of the fuel pump - starter cranks, but engine won't fire like it's getting no fuel. Where should I start looking to solve the problem? Thanks.

First thing I would do is check the fuses. Have you had the tank off lately? If so, you may not have plug all the wires back in all the way, and just by luck, you made it to work, and now it's not making contact. Just a couple quick guesses where I'd start. I too have an 04, but have not encountered this problem yet....

Also, the fuel pump circuit runs in the same loop as the right handswitch, so if it's bad or stuck in "off" position, then no power to the fuel pump. Honda pumps are pretty strong so they don't go bad that often.

Page 5-54 in the Gen 6 maintenance manual gives a good trouble shooting guide for you.

    Fortunately it's not that involved.

My new '06 VFR800 wouldn't start after riding it home from the dealer. I had spent a few minutes adjusting the clock and since the lights absurdly come on when you turn the key to on instead of when the engine is started, the battery voltage had dropped a bit below normal. I could hear the fuel pump whine, the engine would crank but would not start. After trickle charging for a few hours the engine started just fine and the problem has not returned. A friend with some VFR experience says low battery voltage is a common issue on VFRs. There's even a note near the battery about what the correct battery voltage is. I'd check the battery before anything else.

I had that happen after replacing the left fairing. There is a connection under the fairing that powers the fuel pump. Pluged it back in and started right up.

The first thing I think of is the on/off switch like kia mentioned. I never flip mine off so when I jump on it and someone has turned it off I usually get a quick scare before I figure out what happened. At least I think the fuel pump still turns on when the switch is in off pos but then it won't fire.

Sepp - This is *exactly* what happened to mine when it died due to a known wiring harness problem. The Fuse-B power lead pigtail and fuse was partially melted; it still carried voltage (tested 12v) but could barely support any significant current. Gauges worked & other electrics worked fine (including starter), but no fuel pump.

Read up on this thread: Link (specifically look at Jeremy556's posts). Note that there's mention of two problems: a bad ground connection in the front harness connector (this is the Honda VFR Recall) and a poor R/R monitor wire (the latter is what seemingly causes the melted Fuse-B line...*not* covered by any recalls).
