I have a 98VFR and was wondering what is the stock rear sprocket tooth number? I am thinking about going up two in the rear and was wondering what number sprocket to order. Also, will I still be able to use the stock chain or will I need to order a longer one? Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
The stock rear sprocket has 43 teeth and the stock front sprocket has 17 teeth. BTW, if you have an owners manual for the '98 VFR800 could you kindly look up the fuel octane requirement stated in that manual ? I would like to know. Thanks.
I did exactly what you're thinking, (43->45) and added two links (108->110) to the chain length when I did it. Totally worthwhile. It closed up the ratios just enough so that I wasn't gear-hunting when trolling around town, and the throttle was more responsive due to slightly higher rpms. The other option would be to drop a front tooth (17->16) and you wouldn't have to change the chain at all.
