Stock Exhaust Modification? (5th Gen)

    8yrs ago while I thought I was a cruiser rider, I owned a '98 VT1100C3 (Aero). It was a beautiful bike, but rather slow. Of course when you're a cruiser guy, you have to have loud pipes and the guy that I bought it from had put drag pipes on it without baffles and I thought it sounded like ass. Luckily he had retained the stock exhaust. On the AllAero forum, there was a modification that involved gutting the stock can, and putting the internal baffle out of a Glasspak into it. It retained the stock exhaust which I thought was beautiful, and it gave it a nicer sound without being too loud.

    I tried to search this forum to see if anyone had done something similar to VFR exhaust, this is the only one I found.

    Yeh, I've heard of people replacing the cans with a straight pipe. Sounds like #$%.

    My first suggestion, take a 1/8" bit and drill about 8 holes radially around the end of the can on the rear outside the inner pipe, allowing SOME of the exhaust to bypass the inner baffle.

    After that, I would suggest new cans from a decent manufacturer for a different sound.

    D&D, loud, aggressive. A little too loud to me.
    M4, a little better.
    Staintune, one of the best. Lifetime warranty. Pricy.

    And on and on.

    I am currently running Remus Carbon Viper dual ports. Not for everyone, but I like them. Sometimes I run a set of dual carbon cans ala GP style I made by modding a set of bolt ons from an Aprilia RSV.

    Your bike, your $$.

    BTW, you can run virtually any can you want as long as you have a link pipe to fit. You can make/have made these easily.

    Thanks for the reply. Thinking I may just spring for a staintune, as I know the sound and quality from the high mount I just sold.

    IMO, Staintune has THE BEST sound of any of the exhaust systems available for this bike. Quality is unquestionably high, also.

    I know. I had one. Just wouldn't work with the Givi E30 panniers I purchased. I'll keep my eye out for a low mount here and on eBay

    My first bike was a Honda Nighthawk 750. An extremely common mod to that bike they call the "Tim Hodge Exhaust Mod":

    It involves opening up the mufflers and drilling a few holes so exhaust can bypass the baffles, exactly like safetypro10 said.

    The nice thing with that mod is you can experiment with size, number, and placement of holes to get just the sound you want. Also, it's free.

    I did the mod to my bike (twice, actually, because I replaced the pipes after a wreck). That bike is too quiet stock and the mod adds a bit of exhaust volume throughout the range - some grumble down low and a light roar up high. Nothing obnoxious; in fact, it was still quieter than a lot of stock bikes.

    After the success with that, I've been thinking about trying it with the VFR. I haven't moved beyond thinking yet, though, and I'm not even sure how to take the muffler apart.
