Changed the steering stem ball bearings by tapered roller on my vf1000f and have problem adjusting it. I didn't have the tool for the right torque at first and it was always getting loose. I finally got one and set it at the right torque but I'm not sure if it will hold its torque (more miles will tell). The problem I have now is a slow wave in the steering at slow speed. Enough to be annoying when filtering traffic. Frequency seems independent of the speed so I eliminated the poor tire. Any idea what it could be. Bearing too tight, too loose? Something else?

The bearings are too tight. Perhaps when you tightened the lock nut it loaded the bearing race. Threads have a little end play.

Thanks camo, I must admit I've been lazy and did it with the fork and wheel installed. I'll redo it with more care, and less torque.

    Thanks for your feedback.
There is a consensus... on the tightening if not on the (OEM) balls :)

    "Oscillation"

Classic symptom of badly over-tightned steering bearings, much easier to mess up than OEM ball setup. Best done with front end raised and wheel removed.

Finally had time to re-adjust the bearings (and close this thread). Added some slack and wave gone.
