Hi all, tried to start my bike for the first time as have only just got battery. Before this I had bench tested the starter with a car battery and it span slowly and felt rough. The bike came with a spare starter which looked good inside so cleaned it up and on the bench it spins up strongly. Fitted to the bike and with the plugs out it turns the bike over but put the plugs back in and it struggles to turn over more than twice. The engine is free, I have cleaned earthing wires and it has a new battery on it, does it still point towards the starter motor or somthing else. Any advice greatly received, many thanks, Jim.

Ok, having received a manual for the bike I have been able to test the starter and the armature is at fault, I am looking into having the starter rebuilt but would also like a price for a new one or a decent second hand one. In the uk I have not yet found anywhere that stocks new ones, were they used on any other of the vf range, there seem to be more vf750's in breakers yards than the 1000's. The starter on mine is a mitsuba mb2 sm/8216. If they are easier to get in the states can anyone post some links please, many thanks for any help:smile:

Well I have had my starter motor re-built at a cost of £47 and for the first time in 7 years my bike rumbled into life:biggrin: . Now I know it starts and runs I don't mind spending time going through it to get it back on the road.
