i came acrossed a 1986 vf500 from a salvage yard, they said it needed to be cleaned and it would run
this is my first bike ever
so far ive cleaned the carb and replaced the plugs and she's finally running without spraying starter fluid everytime.
    the problem is
it dies anytime i let off the choke even a bit
sometimes i can hit the throttle but it usually dies if i do
but on the occasion i can hit it i can get it up to 4000 rpm and anymore throttle and it starts to bog out

ive read a lot about carb cleaning and got halfway through it by following the manual but unfortunately it was eaten by my roomates dog. but i cleaned all the jets to where carb cleaner blows through except the jet in each carb that isnt removeable, i tried for hours and none of them ever started blowing though.

    any other suggestions?

try soaking them for a few days , but each jet ONLY goes to the carb you took it out of . do NOT mix them up or it will be a long time before you get her up and running. have fun

you can get carb cleaner from autozone and you don't have to spend that much. after you get it backtogether run some seafoam through the tank.

are your vacuum piston slides going up and down easily both by hand and by throttle action.

there's more to it than merely cleaning jets; the small passages inside the carb body need to be clear as well, and high-pressure compressed air along with carb cleaner spray usually is necessary....

    alright updates already.
i went up and bought some sea foam
put it in the gas the intake and the oil
im able to rev it up better, coud even pull it up to the redline if i wanted to
but sometimes it still revs down kinda slow like its running rich but im still not able to let off the choke which makes no sense if its running rich
it did this for awhile and now it wont start again...i could probably get it back up with some ether but id like other opinions

check all your vaccum lines make sure they are all on and the hoses aren't cracked....... make sure your carbs are on and the boots are tight. the reason (one of them) that it is running with the choke on is its getting to much air, let it at idle and spray carb cleaner around each of the bases of the carbs, if it revs up you have a leak. also make sure that the "T" are back inbetween the carbs correctly if one is broke it will suck extra air. did you buy a new battery for it?
