Hello all. Still love my new VFR and so does my 7 year old son. We bought him a good helmet two weeks ago and we've gone on some slow rides together. He thinks everything about it is (pardon the all caps) AWESOME!

I ordered him a good riding jacket today, because I want to send him the right messages regarding smart riding and safety. I'm just curious though if any of you have advice you'd be willing to share on how to keep him interested and also teach him the right things. Anyone have experience.

Or, did any of you grow up with a parent who rides? What did they do right with you?

    Thanks, I'll check back often.

One things for sure, now that you've got him interested, you have to be his positive example at all times. You must also point out stupidity when you see it, ie... ridiculously loud choppers, squids, stuntaz, etc.

To further drive the point home, you must always, 1000% of the time ATGATT & tell him what that means & why you do it.

KC-10FE does "Freaking Rule"...I agree with everything he just said. My boys, now 19 and 22 got their start at 2 and 4 years old believe it or not. The older boy even learned on a "real" bike...1986 KD80 with clutch, gears and everything! Two years old was a challenge and started on a tote goat. Despite ATGATT, buy lots of bandages because when he starts riding he'll need them and wear them like a badge of honor. Good luck to you both and way to go Dad...remember, Mom does not need to know ALL the details; works better for everyone that way!

I started a pre-ride check list that he now knows: my list includes tires, lamps, brakes, bags and gauges. Thank you both for your responses. I'm looking forward to reading a few more.

I'm going through the same with my five year old. Deepdish has a great point about getting him a little dirtbike. It will generate more interest with him having his own bike and you're already on the right track teaching him the correct way to gear up.

Got my daughter a 2001 PW50 almost a month ago for $500 and she's totally hooked; almost ready to remove the training wheels even.

My oldest is now 11 and he started riding with me when he was 5. He also started out at that age on a CRF50. He has graduated to a CRF70 and next year will be on a CRF100. He loves riding with me on the street, but I agree that the dirt keeps his interest because he is doing the riding.

My daughter is 16, and has been dieing to ride 2 up with me. I've finally started the purchasing process of all the gear.

I'll admit I was not one to be ATGATT until I came to this forum. So you guys can thank yourselves! I'm trying to instill that message into my daughter as well. She's a
"wild child", and I just KNOW she's going to end up on a bike.

So, since you said you KNOW she's going to end up on a bike, it's your responsibility to ensure she does it right from the start.
