I have a 1987 VFR750. I went to ride home from work today, but when I pushed the start button . . . the starter didn't turn. This has happened a couple times before, but usually after pushing the start button a couple times, the starter would turn and the bike would start. However, this time it never did start. I'm hoping the problem is just a loose wiring connection, and it's just a matter of locating it. Is that the most likely cause (given the past intermittent problems), or is it likely something more serious?
I'll make the assuption that your starter has a throw-out solinoid on it, which could make sticking a potential problem in addition to connections. If I am not talking out my backside (potential) you may get away with pulling your starter and cleaning it along with checking connections. Makes you long for the kick start....eh?:tongue:
starter in an emergency you can always just short across the 2 solenoid terminals, to get it cranking...................using a screwdriver or some such................. if that doesn't elicit a response from the starter, either your battery is toast or starter motor itself needs attention. read the shop manual!
well, this is the experience i had with my old 83 750...sometimes it started, sometimes it didn't. The problem slowly got worse and worse. I felt like trashing the bike cause of it, it's embarrassing when you've just gassed up with a bunch of other bikes, and now your bike won't start... For me it was as simple as replacing the brushes in the starter motor, might have cost $30 cdn. The motor won't turn if the brushes are shot, no current going through the starter, but the solinoid will still click....justin
