so my 86 VFR700 wont start by pressing the start button, but if i jump the two contacts on the starter solenoid it will. the molex connector connecting to the solenoid is burnt and melted so i want to replace it.

where can i get a replacement molex?

is this a known issue? or do i have something else that caused this burn?

if i cant find a molex, can i just connect the wires to some spade connectors and attach them directly to the solenoid terminals?

how can i test my solenoid to know if it needs to be replaced as well?

    thanks.

Did it melt down on the exhaust? It's common for the contacts inside the thumb button to to melt internally.

The other thing that can happen is the thumb button doesn't release. The starter clutch will dissengage so that it doesn't overspin or grind. But the starter motor will still spin, drawing a lot of amps thru the solenoid wires and overheating the connection.

Without seeing exactly what connector you are refering to, I'd suggest get a replacement male and female connector of any type from your local Napa or similar auto parts store.

it doesnt look like it had anything to do with the exhaust, its two of the four wire connectors have the plastic all around it melted and blackened. i was hoping for an exact replacement, because its not just a connector, it also covers a fuse, so its odd.

look here at c219, the one thats discontinued, and this looks like it.

:: Dataspares Acquisition Limited : Connectors

im hoping someone here has had to replace some connectors and can tell me where to find it.

tonight when i get home ill try to get a picture of it up.

I'm not to sure what you mean as a "molex", even as a Honda tech. I know what you're talking about. The starter soleniod with the red fuse holder. It looks like there available at a Honda dealer. http://www.actionps.com/fiche_section_detail.asp
    The whole thing for $132.00ish

Molex is a brand name for a connector manufacturer. They are used in all kinds of industrial applications like manufacturing machinery. Finding a way around Mother Honda on something like this is wise. $132ish for a part that would cost $10 from a catalog is foolish.

Molex connectors can be purchased at any radio shack store.

I think that Squirrelman knows what to do in this case. Try to post him a message.
