I just got back from a 2,700 trip out west and about half way across South Dakota my speedo needle started bouncing around. also my gear indicator was acting up. I'm thinking it's the speed sensor. what say you experts?

Had a similar issue and as it turned out the plastic connector that links between the speed sensor and the drive was messed up. So instead of replacing the entire speed sensor I just got the plastic part, it was much cheaper and did the trick.

Did you happen to change the sprocket or chain recently? That would explain why the speed sensor is not connected properly. You might want to disconnect the speed sensor and take a look at the plastic connector.

As Joey Dude said. That being said, my 09's sensor went bad around 29k miles so you can't rule it out either. There is a way to test the sensor in the Honda Service Manual. Most likely the plastic coupler that connects the sensor to the sprocket.

^^yeah, what JD said. You need this part: 44808-MR7-013, should be less than $10.

Just unbolt the speedo drive at the sprocket cover and pull it out, slide the old plastic coupling off the shaft and then slip the new one on. When you reinstall the speedo drive just make sure the coupling slips nicely over the sprocket nut head. You might need to rotate the back wheel a little to get it to line up.

I had the same symptoms on my 94. Not all the time just now and then. Leaving for work one night my bike stutters and dies 20 feet from my driveway. Ended up being the main fuse under the seat. Melted the fuse holder.

I ordered the part yesterday. sounds like an easy fix. I needed to pull the lower cowl off anyway for an oil change. thanks for the info....keep the shiny side up.
