    Hi,

I just acquired a beautiful 99 VFR800 and I love it. It just has one major problem: When I turn the ignition on and after the bike goes through its diagnostic/ startup routine, the speedo sits at 25 mph instead of 0. When I start driving, any speed shows that 25 mph too many (so 50mph on the clock is really 25, 100=75 etc.). It makes it a bit tricky to adhere to speed limits, especially since they are in Kph

The first owner mentioned that this had been possibly caused by his addition of heated grips, but I fail to see how that could be the case.

    Any ideas/suggestions would be welcome.

I would see where he tapped in for power to the heated grips, ( just to be safe & sure ). But it sounds like you need a new speed sensor.

Thanks very much. That sounds like a good start. Might take it to my garage to see what error code shows up.

Unfortunately, the speed sensor it was not. Disconnected it and it still shows 25 mph at the start. My mechanic thinks it might be the speedo itself (it slowly move back to zero by the way when the ignition is switched off again), but then I also heard that it might be a problem with the 5V circuit? I assume though that if the reg/rec was the issue I would see other funny things like lights changing brightness etc.?
