Hello All again. I've had my 2001 5th Gen now for 3 months or so. I wanted to know at what Speeds/Gears should these bikes be in. I know it'll be different for most, however I'm sure that there's a general consensus as to what gear you'd normally switch to and at what speed. I find that I've gotta drop down to 1st or 2nd gear if I wanna accelerate at a much faster speed. For instance, like an on and off ramp to an interstate. Trying to accelerate in 3rd or any other higher gear is pointless; unless I have mechanical issues I'm just not realizing I truly have. I've never had the bike mechanically looked at and no one else has driven it to tell me if I do have an issue. Any input would help. Thanks ! ......Examples : 0-30mph 1st Gear 30-40mph 2nd Gear 50-60mph 3rd gear etc....

If you ask SkiMad then any speed above idle = 6th - :)
If I was on my Fireblade, then any speed under 50mph = 1st.. :uk:

However, I rarely use a speedo to change gear as its the rev counter that tells me that. Rarely, will I change up unless its above 4500rpm. You want to avoid lugging the engine & that's it. If you want to go faster then change later - between 8 & 10k. If you need to go much faster then you need a different bike.

I agree, I shift by the tach, not the speedo. 5,ooo rpm is fair acceleration, 7,000-8,000 rpm is spirited, and 9,000 to 11,000 rpm
is "get a ticket if you're not watchful".

The power will not be so jerky if the rpm's are higher.

I don't even use my tach unless I am going for "get a ticket if you're not watchful" mode. And then I should be "watchful", not watching my tach. Its feel, sound and desired result.

If the output starts nosing over, it's time to shift.
