Ya ya I know..dont fix it if it aint broke. Was thinking last night (ouch) on the way home that I bought my bike 2 1/2 years ago with 1800 miles now has close to 17,000 and probably has the original plugs (2002) . Maybe I just dont know that it could run even better...runs great now. Any thoughts?

Time for plug maintenance at least. Check that the center electrode is square and sharp without rounded edges and check/restore the proper .032" gap.

factory service manual for 5th gen specifies replacement every 8,000 miles.

I'd guess the 6th gen isn't any different.

8k seems a little excessive to me but they're cheap and not too difficult to replace.

    I don't know about cheap. Here it's a $99 x 4 plugs & that's off ebay. That's a decent piss up & a bags of nuts. But I get your drift.

When I changed mine, I just bought the iridium plugs that were listed in the manual (NGK), the "coil sticks" I left alone. In this case, I would say leave well enough alone and just replace the spark plugs.

I believe the coils are still mounted on the frame and uses a spark plug wire with a plug on the end that seals to the valve cover.

Nope, just some extensions for your spark plug socket (or regular deep socket with a lil tape wedged inside).
I can't recall if I had to unbolt the tank at the hinge (rear). Something I did on the bike required it but I just left one rear bolt and swung it out of the way. (EDIT: I did- see my post below)
In any event this is all to say it was a very easy job if you have a few simple tools and a 1/4 tank or less of gas.

I changed the first set at 10k, she ran fine and they looked good. The next set was at 22k...running like on three cylinders, the plugs looked normal tho
O'reilly's had the plugs for $5 each...the dealer was $10

The 6 Gen uses "Direct Ignition Coils", which Duccmann is calling "coil sticks", which appear to be on all 6 Gens (2002+) according to the Honda FSM. I would have to assume that all 5 Gens have the traditional frame mounted coils, as that's how they are on my '01.

The DI Coils are item 1 in this screen shot.

VFR 2002 manual says "inspect spark plugs at 16,000 Miles replace at 32,000 miles ." The spark plugs are expensive and special handling instructions apply...it's all in the owners manual. Do not over tighten...very light torque if I remember correctly. I changed mine at 8,000 just because. You can find them http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/honda/HP-31922-MCW-004.html Yes! $27 a piece.

Yes, the NGKs a bit less, but still expensive. Can't remember why I went with the DENSO...musta been a good idea though. The DENSO's I pulled out at 8K looked pristine. However, they were 11 years old.

How can I beat that POM statement! Sweet...

I went back to cheap oem style plugs I believe, I would not be my life on it as I have swapped lots of plugs in the life cycle of the bike...Cheers.
