I was installing some fog lights (I live in the woods)and I said to myself since my tank is up let me see how dirty the Airbox is (installed BMC air filter last year) and look what I found [IMG][IMG] I'm not sure if a bird or a mice was living in there
The fog lights [IMG][IMG][IMG]can't even see the fog lights on the bike

Should I just throw it away and buy another BMC air filter or should I clean it? (Soap & water ) aren't they reusable?

Check for damage, if there is no urine smell, then you might clean. Check wiring over thoroughly, meeces love to nibble on insulation.

Hi Sayo. Good for you for finding this before you're riding and notice your bike is bogging badly. Little fookers poo and pee all over it. I would change it for a new one.

Try blowing it out with compressed air from the back side.

Analysis of any remaining food evidence, such as nuts, shells, or seeds could identify the exact rodent responsible for that mess, mice, most likely, as they prefer nesting in shredded wood or clothes fibers and are commonly found outdoors, in the vicinity of wood piles.

As familiar with various rodents as i am, and as a self-described "Squirrel EXPERT" ( studying grey squirrels for almost a lifetime), i believe that a metal screen of 1/4" squares, properly installed on the intake snorkel, would prevent ingress of various rodentia and protect your engine from possibly irreversible pee damage from corrosive contamination. :disturbed:

The accumulation of padding for the nest has the appearance of mostly being fiberglass insulation. The pink type.
Yea, I'd pitch the filter in favor of a new one. And put mouse traps in the garage where you keep the bike!

Critters sure must have really wanted to nest in your bike....
Seems like they went inside the house for the insulation, and transferred it to the airbox.
Instead of just nesting in the attic.... What darkness lives in the minds of rodents!

I just ditched my pics I took before replacing the air filter yesterday! I had a similar problem. To think I went several thousand miles without a check. Needless to say, the throttle response is improved. Mine is a daily driver. Might have happened over a couple of months during the summer internship at IUPUI (Purdue). Not as bad but embedded in the filter element's valleys were straight poo. Washed hands, sanitized, washed again, sanitize, and finally another rinse.

Was totally remiss. I eluded to some other hip buys, misinterpretations, wishful thinking, failure to read the fine print...in another post. Embarrased :uncomfortableness:

    Ahhh, obsessive VFR disorder! OVD.

I love that color scheme on that 1200! Haven't seen one in the wild though. She'd be my pick over a Gold Wing.

Anyway, I cover my 6TH GEN, no enclosed garage during this lease (5TH safely in garage), with one of those blue tarps and bungie cords. Anyways, I was looking for a good cover that would not mar or scratch the paint, protect from rain, not blow off, and be adjustable enough to accommodate bags and a trunk (although I'd probably not leave them attached for the night even though the 6TH is behind a high locked wooden fence when I'm not lazy) or without any luggage and not cost $$$.

As a gift for my mom, I bought her a cover for her car at purchase. It was $179, youch. I don't wanna spend nearly that much or nearly nearly nearly that much.

One more thing, how do you keep down corrosion on bolts and what not?

Meeces can squeeze through all kinds of tight spots. We lived in very old house in NY, and they were a fact of life. They even stole the cat's food and stored it behind a drawer in the pantry next door! Once I left a miniature Hersey's bar in the ashtray of my van, found two teeth marks in the wrapper. They like warm spots, will get into engines after you get home. (Probably crawled in your airbox after rides). Wife came home from work one day (only 6 miles) and said she smelled something burning. Opened the hood of her Audi V6 A4 and there was a nest on top her exhaust manifold smoldering away!

I would recommend put some copper screening over the end of your air intakes, that will stop them, but keep an eye on other parts of your engine.

After 2 days of soaking the bmc air filter in a bucket(with laundry soap),I watered the filter with a garden hose and everything came out (saves me $70 on buying a new one)[IMG]

Glad they decided not to nibble on it! If you are going park it for any lenght of time, slip a coffee can over the end of your muffler!

They are either for a place to store food or build a nest. Get a cat! Don't let bike sit in one spot too long. Have you seen any critters or droppings?
If you get a male cat, make he has been fixed and doesn't spray (mark his territory), worse than mice!
