I have an 85 vf500 it runs fine and everything just burns a little oil so I eventually want to rebuild the motor. My question is how impossible is it to find the parts to do this ie gaskets, rings, bearings, guides and chains? I've herd that the head gaskets are nla is this true. Also to rebuild this motor whats a rough estimate of the cost. Just for parts I will be doing the rebuild myself. Assuming the cylinders are good and can just be honed. Im looking to replace rings, bearings, gaskets, valve seals and timing chain guides and chains. Also is there anything else you would recommend doing while I have it apart?

you can still get the gaskets for the bike through partsnmore.com , also you can get the head gasket from cometic.com . I'm not sure about the rings and bearing probably from a honda dealer.

I bet the valve oil seals are going. That's why you are burning oil.

Most people say you have to remove the head to replace them, but you don't.

Just pressurize the cylinder through the spark plug hole and that will keep the valve from falling down into the cylinder.

There is still room for the valve to drop....

Another way is to fill the cylinder with rope and then turn engine to TDC for that cylinder.

I replaced seals just turning to tdc. That rope thing helps of course.
