I see people post all the time about how silky smooth their VFR is. I bought my '99 used and don't have another to compare it to, but in no way would I call it silky smooth. Recently with having R/R problems I have been riding at higher RPMs and today intentionally took it up to 11K to see how bad the vibration gets. Above 8K the vibration is unbearable, I didn't go over 11K because I was afraid that the bike was coming apart. When I let off the throttle and pulled in the clutch to remove the engine from the equation the vibrations stopped.

Do the VFR's require any special tune ups to keep them smooth? The valve adjustment last summer showed everything within spec and and didn't change the vibrations any.

Curious - what is your riding experience? - I run my '98 to redline often. I had a '95 and did the same. I would say the engine is just smooth.. it does have a couple spots where the vibs are noticable. Not as bad as a lot of other engine styles. - Now my Valkyrie - THAT'S
    silky smooth..

Hmm, interesting this comes up. I just rode a friends ZX12r in a swap he in turn rode mine ya I know risky, still , anyway I came away that my VFR is way smooth over his I-4 and he even said that Wow! your VFR sure is smooth. Mines a 4Gen getting ready to roll 30k still as smooth as always through out the rpm range. I'm thinking tires here not engine. does it get worse when the speed goes up maybe even have a sorta bad spot in where it's worse at a certain speed and or rpm? try playing around with different speeds and Rpms still think it's tire related never rode a VFR that wasn'r smooth. Oh yea, then there's the chain to check out. I've heard those cause things to get buzzie as well even if it's lubed well, gota keep your eye on the slack.

Been riding 6 years, 3 on a Kawasaki Ninja 500R, and 4 on the VFR. (one year with both bikes) I would say the vibration on the VFR is similar to the Ninja. I always thought that "that's the way it is" until recently when I had to ride at higher RPMs with a failing R/R. Then I began to question the comments about silky smooth or smooth as butter I keep seeing.

hmm, that does seem odd. in comparison to pretty much every other bike I've owned, the VFR ranks way up there in smoothness. there's no comparison between it and an inline four (or at least the inline fours I;ve had) my harley was nowhere near as smooth (granted it was old and a sportster to boot). Are you feeling the vibes from the engine or from the front end? Is it possible that some mount has come loose or something like that?

    Smooth it's not

I bought a new '99 VFR, and have always had vibration problems. Dealer retorqued engine mount bolts (at about 600 miles) with slight improvement. I have heard that the butterfly valve syncing is very important and sensative. Will be trying that soon - don't know why I've waited this long. Tires don't seem to have much effect - new or old.

Ya know an interesting thing just popped in my head when re-reading this thread. Last weekend I and a few others RW inculed did a ride, towards the end of the day RW was curious how my VFR rode, so we switched. interesting note on two accounts one his VFR is a 99 so it has the older mirror style, any way those vibrated, I thought that was odd also noted even thou it's a vfr the mirrors are mouted higher when comperd to my 97, again odd how Honda changed little things, I also noted the wind screen is taller. Then once down the road his VFR had a Buz in the 2-3K range didn't matter what gear it was in, it wasn't bothersome but was noticable, especially since I was freash of a 250 milier on my vfr when we switched, So yea now I'm thinking it's just has to be build quialty between bikes? Very interesting Watson....
