Anyone ever do this as the one in the sidecar? People can go try out to be in real races this weekend at PIR, I would absolutely love to go! Too bad I don't have leathers, and you know, am supposed to be taking it easy..

"The guy" is called a monkey. They do not get the press the rider/driver gets. BMW dominated this type racing for years.

Speedway rigs are much different than roadrace rigs. Sidehacks were also popular in desert racing. One of the real pros on sidehacks in general is David Hough. Dave will be installed in the AMA "Hall of Fame" in December.

If anyone goes to PIR, look up Jerry Chinn. Jerry races side hack and does antique hillclimb on his 1932 and 33 Indians. He can fill you in on what its all about. Great guy.

No No No. You might get punched if you call them the monkey to their face.:boink: They prefer passenger.

Got to ride one back when I was racing. They would run the sidecars on sprint race weekends. Got to become good friends with some. They gave rides one weekend during the break between practice and racing. They were using Suzuki 1000cc motors in the open class. Talk about a wild ride.

    I'll take two wheels please.

I had the chance to see some sidecar racing when I was stationed in Europe in the late '60's, at the German Grand Prix. Very impressive watching those passengers moving from side to side, and hanging off while transitioning through the chicane at nearly 100 mph. Very big brass ones IMO.

Yeah I have seen the clips of it, didn't know the average Joe could go try out to actually be in a race though. Pretty neat opportunity!

    WheelNuts > Sidecar racing

Synopsis of WWWWW&H at this addy.

In a street rig, the passenger would be the "passenger." On a racing rig the monkey term is apropos to the movement around the rig.

From watching these nutcases haul ass like they do, I would venture that if the "monkeys" had tails they would use them.

Probably some vids on the net or some part of a longer film shot at The IOM or other.

Badbilly have you ever hung out with sidecar racers? I think you would really find out what's apropos and what's not. Live and learn.

Freakin nuts is what I call them......but I agree...unless you've done it you shouldn't become "expert" on what to call someone....( that means I can call anyone an a$$hole.....cause I am one....

honestly They do look like monkeys fying around the side car(or hack) especially on the twisty road races awesome....I get pucker factor 10 when I ride that fast so no thanks on hanging off at 100 plus miles an hour

respectfully, (only if you deserve it)

I just reread BB post , and I think what he was meaning was the MOVEMENT of the secondary rider is that of a monkey.........

Yikes! All this time I thought "apropos to" and "apropos of" were prepositions. Read up a post or two. Do I know some sidehack racers? Sure do. Do I hang out with them? No.

I was in BMW MOA for years. One of the local guys who races a BMW rig with his son as "monkey" owns a Marine supply near my shop. Another guy I know is currently in my MC. I named him. Jerry Chinn is an art director for films and has a warehouse of props he rents and leases.

That being said, it might be a good idea to punch up the subject in general terms on one of several seach engines and observer for yourself that indeed those guys and women too, are called both.

If you feel the need to really have the inside track on this, I can Email Dave Hough who has written a book on sidehacks. I don't hang around with Dave but I know him well enough to have had him on several of my rides and well enough to that he uses my photos in his other books.

I don't hang with Brad and Angelina either.

I think what we should do is start a whole new thread about people we hang out with and people we don't hang out with.

I'll start: I hang out with Dave, Kenny and Dog. I still don't hang out with Brad and Angelina.

Dog is my dog. He doesn't race but he is way cool to hang out with. A genuine babe magnet.
