I'm having a problem with the side stand sensor on my 2000 vfr. I can't put the bike in gear or start the bike in gear because the sensor is obviously malfunctioning. Connections look fine but the area around the side stand is of course covered in chain lube and you can't see anything and I ran out of light today . Is there some quick fix? Is there a fuse for it?

Agreed the only fix is to buy a new one or bypass it.

So theres no quick fix? Why would it die so suddenly? It was fine 3 months ago the last time I rode it.

What does it cost to fix this? I'm not much of a mechanic.

I actually don't know how it works, never needed to look at mine, so this might be totally off base. I will also say that I suck at electrical stuff.
But you mention the area is covered in chain lube. I would start be just giving the area a real good (but gentle so you don't ruin something) cleaning. If it is an electrical switch witht he sidestand completing the circut, maybe the old lube is just blocking the sensor from reading the position of the side stand? Get some contact cleaner in there perhaps and resolve the issue? Or if it is a mechanical type switch, could be as simple as one part having turned or shifted in some way and just needs to be lined back up to work properly. Cleaning it will allow you to see more and maybe even resolve it.
If it needs to be replaced, I would start with junk yards and EBay, also look into whether the part is, and it would make sense if it was, a standard Honda part and therefore you can use any number of models for a donor. There is no reason I can think of that Honda wouldn't use the same one for several, if not all their models at the same time.

I hate to be the Safety Sammy of the group but bypassing it is a poor idea. Take it off and clean it up and see if it is serviceable and if not replace it. If you bypass it you only need to forget to put the side stand up one time for a horrible disaster. I have seen first hand this disaster and it was not pretty.

have seen people ride off with the side stand down from time to time. I have seen people leave their keys in the helmet locks too, seen lots of stuff.

My side stand sensor was disabled as it was routed to a toggle switch under the seat to disable the bike with a flick of the switch. My beloved bike was backed into by a truck and pushed down a hill, where the side stand bent. The new one I got off Ebay I wired back into the system and tossed the toggle switch, as I never really let that bike out of my sight or if I do, its covered and locked.

I would take it apart and clean it and re-assemble if it was my bikie. Dats just me though...I wouldnt spring for anything over 15 bucks to replace it though.
