I am trying to get back in the cycling scene after a 12 year hiatus. I am looking at an 86 Honda VFR 700 Interceptor. It is clean as a pin and was a trade in on a new 800. The bike looks good and went thru the shop and was checked from A to Izzard with a clean bill of health, but it has almost 50,000 miles on the odometer. Is that mileage cause for concern? i am not that familiar with the V4, however, i do understand that the chain driven cams are a good step in the right direction. I am supposed to go see the bike either this weekend or the middle of next week. Any suggestions of what to check or look for or other directions would be greatly appreciated. thanks and hope this is the beginning of a long stay with this forum!!! Arnold
My 87 has 35,000 on it and still runs like a top! Many guys put lots of miles on these bikes, there is a thread somewhere about it.
Not real sure about the 700 but I'd imagine it's as dependable as the 750 and 800 which are known to go over 100000 miles if taken care of...
DON"T WORRY The GEAR-DRIVEN cams and entire engine hold up well. The clean condition suggests the bike was maintained and not abused. You might ask the shop to do a hot compression test to confirm the condition of rings and valves. Water-cooled engines last much longer than the air-cooled you remember from years ago. Ask the shop to test the charging voltage before you leave. It's a great bike!!
