    Well how about some history?

Is the 1000 running? everything in good shape but the fairings?

This question IS a bit harder; you could always part out or sell at a good price the bike to another VF owner.

Oh, and nice to see you elf, deepdish.

Personally, I feel the R is worth more and looks better stock, or even repainted in racing colors. You can buy complete fairings from poly26.com.

You can also pick up gas tanks from Ebay US or UK, if your careful.

Or you can sell it in present condition. Someone will be glad to give it a new home.

If the bike is all complete except the problem with the gas tank and fairings I would get a new tank and fairings.
The bike is a valuable bike if complete.

A "street fighter" done poorly from a road racing bike will be worthless and will just look like a
trashed out sport bike and the VF1000R deserves more.

Those bikes were expensive when new and many young guys would dream of owning one. Treat it with respect.

First start looking for a good tank or get that one repaired by a pro.

    Just my opinion.
