I just went from an rf1000 to an Arai Quantum 2 - the Arai is far better in every possible way. No more Shoei's for me.

Can you qualify that a bit more as to in what ways? (lighter, quieter, better fit, better visibility, etc.)

I just bought an RF1000. The vents work great. Very light(not heavy). The aerodynamics are very nice (i.e. the helmet just seems to float, and head bobble is reduced to almost none over my HJC). So far I'm impressed with it. Price: US$329.

I went from an RF800 to an Arai Astral. My impressions differ somewhat from yours.
    Arai
    - better venting so cooler in summer (but much more noise)
    - plush liner (mmmm nice)
    - I really dislike the shield attaching mechanism

    Shoei
    - superior shield mechanism makes it way easier to swap or clean
    - quietest helmet I've owned
    - Pin-lock shield system available (for easy attachment of anti-fog type inserts)

While I believe I have a Shoei head, comfort was high on both of these helmets but the shield mechanism bothers me enough that my next helmet will be the Shoei RF1000 or the X-Eleven (because of the removable liner).

Theres Arai heads and then there's Shoei heads, ya need to try em on to know which head you are. LOL but you really can't go wrong build wise with either one, for me I roll with a Shoei X-SP and or an X11 depending on my mood swing. Now if only they had some really cool new designs, I could be interested in a new helmet.
