i have a 87 vfr. i just found out that my bike shifts up or down in gears without even pulling the clutch in? it doesn't even seem to affect the bike's riding either. is this normal?

Yes its normal you should clutch between 1 and second. going up through gears i seldom use clutch. down shifting i still use clutch.
