I was wondering if any other earlier VFF owners had encountered this problem, and if there was a simple solution for it? I was thinking about removing the link on the shifter stem itself(might not be the proper name for it) and putting it back on a little more forward. Like sliding it on in the 11 o'clock or 11:30 position as opposed to the 12 o'clock position it seems to be in now.

Any help would appreciated, as well as any other ideas.

The tabs that the side stand slide into on the frame (mount point) are probably bent. The early ones were not terribly robust and didn't handle the weight of a person sitting on the bike with the stand down.

Yes I had this problem the shifter is likely bent.
I took a small pry bar with the point of it against the frame right behind where the shifter mounts and placed the bar along the inside of the shifter, and bent it back out enough do that the shifter cleared the stand by almost an inch.

Not only did it cure the shifter Sticking on the downshift but it felt better on top of my foot to.

The next time I dropped it , I had to bend the shifter again.

My shifter was hitting the kick stand, solved it buying a shift lever from VF1000 which has an extra bend in it.
Thanks to another member for the idea.

    I like the replacement concept...

My 2000 didn't feel right when riding, so I just pulled the arm off of the end of the splined shaft and repositioned it. One spline was all it took to feel better on my boot. I've been wondering if another one might be even better?

Well thank you all for your input. I found that it was a combination of the tabs on the kickstand being bent and some real sloppiness in the shifting linkage. Fortunately the parts bike I have, had the shifting linkage still on it. They didn't look as nice as the ones that were on the running bike but they had a lot less sloppiness in them. While I had the kick stand off I blasted it in the cabinet and repainted it with some rattle can truck bed liner.

I fiddled with all the adjustments first, my problem was I found it difficult to consistently lift the lever high enough on every shift, (not as flexible as I used to be), so I wanted to lower the lever and the kickstand got in the way no matter what I did.
