I Posted a Craigs List Listing a while back, & the original poster finally posted a picture of it, & I ran the Vin #. It is an Asian market Bike made in Japan & it is an '85 VF1000R

I know the R is more desirable, But is this bike worth rebuilding?

Good project or expensive, pointless time-waster, you wouldn't know without an extensive investigation, starting with why it was left in a non-running condition, checking cylinder compression and basic gear-shifting first, then considering what's missing or damaged. Bikes sitting in the open in the south pasture are almost always junk, doncha think ?

Ask how much you'd be prepared to spend ??

If you Love the 1000R and throwing plenty of time and cash at it makes you happy then DO IT!!! - nothing better han the big VF brought back from the dead (although I'm satisfied enough to be a spectaor on these awseome projects). But if any of these three ingredients are not there it doesnt look worth while to me. Just my 2cents!

Hard to tell from the pic but it appears to have been in a fire. In this case I think you need to go see the bike if possible. If your really interested bring a few tools pop an engine cover off, try & turn engine over with a ratchet or something. Make sure the engine turns over at the very least.

I'm with squirrelman on this one. You can't make a good decision until you thoroughly inspect the bike.

The more I look at the pic, The more I believe it was a Carb fire gone ugly. Me thinks she is a parts bike.
It is unfortuniate to see a 1000R & say it is a lost cause, but this one is!

I think you could bring that bike back to concours condition for less than ten K. What a great learning opportunity lies ahead. The first step would be to rent on of those bigass brush cutters.

I would look at the bike and try to get a quick visual estimate on what parts are in good saleable condition. Add the value of those parts up in my head and use that as my offer. If you can get it for a break-even price then it might be worth rolling the dice. At least at that point you only risk your time and effort.

I'm always up for a challenge but I don't know if I would take it if is was free. Cost of ridiculously over priced used R parts makes this one a no go IMO. Faded parts are one thing , melted parts are another. From the pic it looks like it needs an upper and lower fairing(price those on Ebay...you'll laugh...or cry) headlight, headlight surround, gauges, wiring harness, fuse panel, bar controls , airbox, carbs, filter, cables, both radiators, hoses and fans, master cylinders, fender, every plastic or rubber thingy, blah blah blah. The front wheel is from an F so the back might be as well and sitting outside long enough for weeds to grow in is no bonus. Tank gas cap is open and we know what that means. All these parts are through the roof in price now, don't ask me why but they are. Added up you'll be in the thousands and still have a questionable motor. Starts to look like buying a good used one more economical. Even if someone just wants a project, a fire damaged bike is not the place to start because you have to buy so many stupid little things that were melted or distorted. You asked so I say pass. Your 750 looks so damn good it would be a shame to park that thing any where near it!
