Has anyone found a good aftermarket ignition coil for second gens? I may need to replace my coils, and used ones seem to be easy enough to find, but I'd like to go new and just figured I'd see what you guys have done. Anything by accel or anything? Or is OEM the best bet...

If your stock coils are good they'll zap a fat blue spark to ground over a distance of about 7mm, and if you can reach redline in 3rd or 4th gear without any misfiring, they're also good, and you have all the spark you'd need on a stock engine.

Your real or imagined question about your bike's unimpressive speed is probably not related to spark issues. What other faster bikes have you ridden for comparison. Have you checked your cylinder compressions?? What are they ? Leak-down test is better, and HF makes cheap gauges !
Low compression=low power. High mileage wear or harsh use could have combined to make a lower than average HP on any engine, VFR or other, but it would be very unusual to have too much compression loss at anything less than about 55-65,000 miles, i'd guess.

I haven't tested compression, I suppose I should though. I've never actually ridden a faster bike, which is why I feel like a 700 should feel fast to me. I get some misfire/hesitation when the engine is cold, but it's usually pretty smooth. I'll probably do a compression check then do plugs and clean/rejet the carbs if need be. My ignition coils are just way out of spec, 40 ohms across the main terminals instead of 2-3 or whatever the manual spec is.

If the high voltage output is normal (strong spark), don't fret about the unusual resistance in the low voltage part.

Alright, well i'll probably finish the basic tune up and do the carb work, thanks for the response!

If your bike runs smooth at a steady 3500 and at around 7000 too, chances are that nothing's wrong with your carbs. An experiment to adjust the fuel level higher (lower the floats) might be worth trying as the engine is probably running a bit lean. Another, easier thing to try would be to turn each mixture screw 1/2 to 1 turn counterclockwise and see if there is any improvement.

Do you have experience reading sparkplug colors, and what do yours look like ?? Photos help.

Yeah, I work in a german auto shop, just haven't had time to do much. Only pulled one plug so far, it was pretty dark. Are the mixture screws the pilot screws?

    They are.

Any poor running, check the plugs first ! The photo of the single plug above shows best color, imo. The ground squirrel photo was an extra bonus.
