In a few weeks, I'll be embarking on my first ever Iron Butt Challenge.

I'm going to be taking the Saddlesore challenge which is 1000 miles in 24 hours or less. My intent is to complete in about 16 Hours.

I'll be posting a little along the way if I have service, I may even run a "Where's Jeffy" contest to see if y'all can guess where I am at certain points in the journey.

Feel free to post about your own experiences and advice.

Ive done a few 1000+ mile days never logged them for iron butt. I like to carry a hydration pack on long trips with one can monster rehab ( or other non carbonated) energy drink and the rest water. It keeps me alert and I don't get the spike and crash.

Didn't dismount unless my bladder made me then since I had to go in the store any way id fill my hydro pack wet my cooling vest and snap into a slim jim before the gas had a chance to realise it was in a smaller holding tank. Oh and the miles just fall away under you when you're doing 90 all the time lol

No. This is a different ride ... Randy wants to do the Canada to Mexico thing in 24 hours I think it is. That's next year.

Haha ... 200+ is peanuts. When I'm travelling, 500-600 miles is the minimum for a day.

My advice is to work up to it though. I commute on 4-lane highway almost an hour in each direction, plus I ride late at night just to get out and think / clear my mind. I also workout regularly, this is important to build up your strength, you may be sitting but you become fatigued quickly on a motorcycle at highway speeds, especially in crosswinds.

I've put more than 15,000 km's on this year already. This will likely be my first year where I need to order a new set of tires and install them before the end of summer.

Jeff. Read up on the rules. If ot becomes obvious that you are thundering along at speeds well over the speed limit, they may refuse to recognize the challenge. Same with unsafe practices and things like pep pills or caffiene tabs.

I doubt Jeff is going to do any drugs. I don't doubt there will be those who will want to see pix of his butt before and after.

Thanks, bud! I'll be adhering to the speed limits within standard practices. I won't be using any pep pills or caffeine tabs - I'll be well hydrated on sports drinks though. Going to try and stay away from RedBull except maybe on the home stretch so I don't spike and crash.

Who doesn't want to see pix of my butt before and after??

Really, I joke about eating beefsticks all the time, but this is true. Fast and easy to wolf down and healthy dose of protein. Eat one at each stop and you could ride forever.

The most I've done in a day was Toronto to West Bend Wisconsin 865kin a day (West Bend to Sault Ste. Marie to Toronto 2186k in a weekend) I stopped at a few Timmies and I stopped and swam in Lake Michigan which cools you off and wakes you up

I'm getting excited for this trip to start.

For a game, I may take photos of the bathrooms I stop at and you all will have to figure out where I am at. I'll even do closeups of the graffiti.

I did it a couple years ago when I bought my GS. It wasn't too bad for the first 600-700 miles, but the GD Rocky mts had it in for me and if it hadn't been for Tinkerwstuff I'd probably never have made it across them. The sleet, rain, and snow was a biotch to ride through. Visibility was shite so I just followed the squarish outline of an SUV and hoped they stayed on the road.

As far as staying awake, fear does a good job of that, but when I was crossing Kansas, I stood on rear pegs for miles at a time and stretched. I stretched at all gas stops and I mostly just drank water except for coffee in the morning and at the McDonalds in Vail when I was drying my socks with the hand dryer.

I actually qualified for both Saddlesore and Bunburner, but only did the paperwork for SS figuring on the doing the other some other time when someone is interested.

Done a few long days, longest was about 1300 miles, not for fun but because I had to get home for work after four flat tires in one day made my vacation ride an endurance test. Some people actually think this is fun. I knew one gal who bought a new BMW K75 and brought it in for the 16,000 mile service two weeks later. She had ridden from San Jose, CA to the East Coast, done the Iron Butt (11,000 miles in 10 days), then set a record from New York back to San Francisco. A Google search for "Fran Crane motorcycle" should turn up several stories.
