Rusty oem pannier rack

    Anyone having issue with their factory rack rusting that caused by constant vibration on the road? I don't see any viable solution of re-painting and having new painted rack rust again once I put a few hundred km on the road.

    Anyone have better solution?

    I'm trying to figure out how vibration causes rust first.. Then I would need to see what a factory rack looks like.

    I know there are plastic surgeons who have rack factories..

    Mine hasn't rusted, but the paint. Has worn down to the metal in spots. I would think repainting this part black each year along the edge that wears might be your only solution if the problem persists. I would imagine powder coat would stand up better if you want to go to the trouble. Lynex and rhino liner would probably protect it, but I imagine these are too thick for the luggage to secure properly. It does make me wonder if a roll-on bed liner off the shelf might work. They usually go on much thinner. Just some ideas really. Otherwise x2 on the several coats of paint.

    Same issue here. As mentioned, wrapping it in tape is probably the best option for prevention.

    Sounds a familiar problem if you cover long distances and use the panniers a lot. I guess the rusty areas look a bit like mine..

    Inevitably the paint on the carrier can get damaged as the panniers are fitted to the bike and vibration as you ride along can make things worse, and eventually expose bare metal which once it gets wet will start to rust. As for the cure, a light sand down and several coats of decent paint will keep things at bay for a while, or you could have the frame sand blasted and powder coated for a more long lasting solution. If that sounds too much, then do what I do and just coat the rusty areas every few months with ACF50. The frame will probably outlast the rest of the bike.

    Applying finish paint over rust is not real smart. There are "rust converters" that act as primers.

    Most full line paint stores carry same. Krylon (Sherwin-Williams) has an aerosol (rattlecan) version.

    It is likely that the OEM racks are powdercoated as delivered. The vibrations do not cause oxidation. That ain't real smart either.

    Where the coating has worn off or chipped off to bare metal unless feathered back and primer filler applied then sanded back or all is removed by stripping a/o media blasting, rough edges will show.

    Tape in spots after addressing the oxidation is possible as is dipping in a polymerized coating, plating is another possibility.

    For tape, a good one IMO is Gorilla..
