I have a '97 VFR750 and I'm in the process of getting my fairing repainted (a student of mine knocked over my bike). They said it will take three weeks. Without the upper fairing, I can not use my headlights. Will driving without headlights affect my voltage regulator? I have driven without them before for a short time (less than a week) and shortly after my voltage regulator failed. Was this a coincidence, or was there too much current to bleed off, or did my bike overheat?

    Thanks for any help.

Even during the day in most states it is illegal to ride without lights.

You could use a carbide miners light strapped to your helmet. I don't think it would damage your bike, though.

If you HAVE to ride in the day, at the very least get a bright bicycle light, or better yet, a high output mtn biking light from a buddy who rides. Bikes are hard enough to see as it is with a headlight.

If you drive with your eyes closed, it should be OK without the lights.
