Just got off the phone with with a friend who is near Grottoes, VA in the Shenandoah National Park. She asked me to post this to warn anyone (or inform those who are inclined to gravel!) that the entire length of Skyline Drive (approximately 100 miles) is covered in gravel right now. They tried to chip seal the road, but apparently only got the "Chip" and forgot the "Seal". She talked to a ranger who told her that they sent trucks out to clean up the mess, and all they did was make things worse. He said it was that way for the entire length through the park. If you enjoy riding gravel that might be a place to go. If you were heading that way and don't like riding on gravel you might want to revise your plans. Update - 09/20/07 - The gravel on the road does NOT go all the way to the north end of the park as I originally said. It stops near Waynesboro (Va?) at N 38° 18.541', W 78° 37.039'
