So, last Monday I was riding my VFR on Hwy 96 with my brother on his Ducati ST2 - with saddlebags. We pulled into Quigley's in Klamath River. We met a Super Hawk rider who insisted his bike goes 167 miles an hour - but it probably would have gone faster if he hadn't backed off. He said.

So we drank our coffee drinks and the Super Hawk douchebag dissed my VFR as "too heavy" and my brother's ST2 as "underpowered". And let's be clear - he was 30-something. I am 57. My brother is 68.

He wants to ride with us toward Happy Camp. I think, "Nooooooooooo!" but my brother says, "Sure, but you lead."

So, the guy takes off and immediately tries to drop us. I am third in this line and I think, "Let him go!" but my brother is thinking differently. It was a mess. The Super Hawker hung off on the wrong side in corners!!! But he hit high speeds on the straights. Sweet!

I laid back about 10 bike lengths on my overweight VFR because (1) I wanted to watch, and (b) one never knows what mayhem can happen when the lead rider screws up. My brother had a different approach and was hanging close. But he is 68 years old and is a Big Kid at heart.

It was a nerve-wracking 15 miles to our turnoff on the Scott River Road to the Scott Valley (Fort Jones). The Super Hawk douchebag never looked back as we turned off.

Moral of the story? Even if your bike goes 167 MPH, learn how to ride it through a corner!

Whether on a Gixxer or ZX-R or Super Hawk etc a Nob is a Nob, mind a Super Hawk with high rise Staintunes is one of the nicest sounding bikes that's not a VFR so wouldn't be too bad following and would imagine more amusing and much less frustrating then some Chopperised HDs I've been stuck behind through tight twisties this year.

Riding with noobs definitely scares me, hanging off on the wrong side will catch up with him eventually, most likely on a tight technical set of twistys. Hwy 96 is is fun but I'm favorite road in the area is Hwy 36 just a bit south of Hwy 96. Easily my favorite road of all time with its perfect pavement, minimal traffic and 140 miles of non ending twistys. The rhythm a rider can get into on that road is just pure bliss...

Man, I feel like a heel! In anaemic defense I can say only that we dipped down into NoCal on the spur of the moment. We had been riding Oregon BUT made an unplanned ride to the Scott River Road over to Fort Jones and then through Yreka and back to 96 via 263, then north to I-5 and back to Oregon.

Next time I promise I'll do you better!

OK! It's on my list now!

I have ridden the stretch east of I-5 from Susanville into Red Bluff. Time to try to western stretch!

I am new to the forum and just picked up a '87VFR700F2.
I got to go on a 250 mile ride for the first time on the VFR.
I really enjoyed the ride. It was different from my
'98 Superhawk that I have ridden for over a a decade.
I have a lot of respect for the VFR and would choose it
to ride over mine for certain rides. I run Two Brothers Carbon Fibers
and am geared sprocket wise. To be honest, the lower to mid
range pull on the Superhawk is more pronounced, but mid to
top range is very good on the VFR. The pull from 7000 to
10k+ is addicting. I would never part with my VTR but the
VFR has definately earned a spot in my heart. Its not what
you ride(except for mopeds:() its that you ride, I feel...
With my present gearing the VFR would probably have a higher
Top end. But I seldom(never) ride at 140+ MPH. Go figure.:)

Welcome to the forum. Love the sentiment about its not what you ride, but that you ride.
    Cheers

Give us some notice and me and some of the Norcal boyz could meet you in Red Bluff next year. It's only 3 hours away for me and 2 hours for the Sacramento boyz. Hwy 36 and the Dragon are always considered the top two roads in the nation for pure two wheel bliss. Here is a link that goes a little mote in detail...

Here is a pic one mile out of Red Bluff at the beginning of Hwy 36

Also, whenever you're in the Scott Valley area be sure to stop by the Etna Brewery. They have excellent beers and delicious food. Highway 3 goes right through there, is a fiesty little road in its own right, and it leads to hwy 36!

you might be surprised but your 87 700 will never pull redline in 6th with stock gearing no matter how hard you try. Go -1 on the front sprocket and be amazed. More torque and the bike will absolutely rip on top.

I am still going throught the VFR700f2. Just finished soldering the connector between stator and R/R.
I will try the -1 on the front sprocket. Equal to about +2 on the rear? Never tried to red line her in
6th yet but good to know. Just tryng to get used to my "new to me" bike. I like the classic look
and feel of the bike. Very relaxing ride. Thanks for the heads-up.
