My wife and I having a holiday in Vietnam at the moment, and have done a couple of full day rides with a local adventure guides in Hoi An. All away from the tourist spots and traveling into the country side, river delta and mountains. What a blast. My GoPro has been recording most of it and I'll cut a short video when we get back to post here. It is a fantastic experience and I highly recommend it. Here I'm boarding a local ferry. It is actually very efficient. There are thousands of these here. Here is a picture of Hoi An. Riding out over the Hai Van pass tomorrow I'll post some more pictures as I go.
Would love to go see Vietnam. Going by bike would be a bonus but my wife has made it perfectly clear to me, she is not getting on a bike. Enjoy the remainder of your trip.
Or you can join us next May on an 10 day charity ride from Hanoi to the mountains on a Ural. You can do it with or without side car. This is much more involved as you take in river crossings, bamboo bridges, ferries and mud tracks. Not for the faint hearted. But fun by the bucket load. This is to raise money for a charity that rescues kids from Chinese brothels and sweat shop slavery. A good cause and a fantastic experience.
Lots of scooters there. There are motorcycle manufactures that make all sorts of bikes that we never see or probably have little use for here in the states. They are for basic transportation and work. Any Harleys would be found at Ho Chi Minh Harley-Davidson.
There a quite a few HD in Vietnam Not sure if you remember VietHorse on of the member live in Vietnam. He have a thread some where in VFRW :thumb:
Motorcycles over 175cc are classified luxury items and carry a 300% tax. There is still not much trade with the west. And most motorcycles and scooters are local manufacture or Chinese. Old bikes are Soviet built. You will be amazed at what they can carry on a scooter. I've seen a 70cc scooter towing a trailer with 2 cows, a local brick layer goes past here every morning towing a brick saw that is towing a cement mixer. Most scooters wil carry up to 4 people with ease.
Don't step off the roads as US land mines and UXBs are still present and killing people years after an illegal and criminal war. Don't blame me as i burned my draft card in front of the Pentagon in 1967. :distress:
