So I accidentally dropped my tank when working under the airbox and sheered the wiring to the brown connector ( fuel pump)

Ordered some female crimps and recrimped the wires and slid them back in the brown connector. Bike starts and runs no problems.

However on my test ride. About 5 min a heard a rattling like a screw and then my fuse for headlights blew taking off all lighting and instrument panel sans the time.

On one hand hearing a loose screw makes me feel that maybe that caused a short.

On the other hand im now only 60% i wired back the brown connector with the correct polarity.

Can someone offer some insight. Would the fuel pump still run if I accidentally reversed polarity and could it blow a fuse on the instrument panel? Or is it most likely something completely different that caused it.

I feel like every repair i do atm is breaking something else. Looking for someone experienced to save me from myself.

Also just adding. Even without the instrument cluster. Engine is starting and running normally.

    Update:

It wasnt a screw jiggling. It was my license plate hanging on for dear life on a cheap ebay fender eliminator, sheering the license plate light and escaping down the freeway.

Fuse changed and loose wire removed.
    Now to go find it….

What year bike do you have?

Assuming the pump is isolated from frame/ground as it has both positive and ground terminals, then hopefully reverse polarity shouldn't blow a fuse, however, being a DC motor reverse polarity could have the pump running backwards!
A test with an ohm meter on the Pump terminals will confirm whether one of the terminals goes directly to Ground or not. if it does go to Ground, then reverse polarity will definetly blow a fuse - If it was a 5th gen it would take out Sub fuse B 20amp.

Are both fuel pump terminals exactly the same size? Some bikes have a large and small terminal making it easy to identify what wire goes where.

    Its an 02’

Even if its DC, the bike shouldnt run well (if at all) with the pump in reverse right?

The terminal is the brown two pin connector on the main loom. They are the same size, but angled to fit the socket one way. They of course didnt label it expecting someone to resolder/crimp the socket itself.

Also found the plate luckily just tonight. The reflectiveness made it possible. So now i dont have to stress out at the dmv.

What ate u guys using for fender eliminators on this model? I need a new one

Assume you took out Fuse G 10 amp, not the 20amp Headlight Fuse F.?

Fuse G is the headlight relay control power along with Instrument Lights etc. It also powers your license plate light. So I guess its a high probability that when the license plate assy parted company from the bike it probably shorted the light wiring to frame and took out Fuse G 10amp.

Agree, if the fuel pump was running backwards from incorrect polarity you'd sure know about it!

Good news you have the pump and bike running OK.
