Our 87 vfr 700 did that until I pulled the carbs off and cleaned them. The low speed jets were all clogged up.

Similar issue on my 900SS Duc, pilot jet screws needed to be opened a few turns. The issue came up when the choke cable was removed and when it was reinstalled (correctly) the bike started to act up a bit. Apparently when the carbs were cleaned an installed earlier in the year, the choke was always slightly engaged, thus the low speed mixture was rich enough to allow the bike to idle normally. The issue on my bike was that in the leaner condition, the ignition advance would kick in and the bike would rev up and stay at @3000 RPM.

I would consider cleaning the carbs and making sure you don't have any clogged jets and starting with the factory settings for the pilot screws (I think you can find post on carb rebuilds fairly easy). With that, if you never had any experience with carburetors you might want to seek a professional, tuning a single carb is time consuming, two is a little more tricky, but 4 is quite a task all to itself. If you have time and patience, and a mechanical aptitude, then it might be worth having a go at it.

    Cheers
