replacing a 03 motor with a 06

    hi I have a 03 VFR, I am thinking of replacing my engine (It has a bad nock and has 82K) I found a 06 motor, but I am not sure if i can do the swap because of the computer. i have a new wire harness and stator/RR.

    Any advice?

    Welcome aboard.

    I should probably let someone with more familiarity on this model respond, but my understanding is that 02-06 was identical, and that it was in 2007 that they relocated the R/R.

    I would think it should be a pretty straight forward swap?

    Are you sure the knock isn't something like a CCT?

    Inherently the same frame is used by the early/late 6th gens, so a later vtec engine can be physically installed in an early vtec bike BUT you will probably need to swap the ECU as the vtec transition points (controlled by the ECU) were different on later engines so it needs the newer ECU. Things may get more expensive if either vehicle had the HISS security system installed, as the ECU is in turn coded to the ignition key, so you may also need to obtain a suitably coded ignition key and sensor ring. (HISS was installed on most European 6th Gens from 2006 onwards - but I am not sure if it was offered on many bikes sold in the USA.

    I assume you have already had a mechanic examine the 03 engine and as a result are considering replacing the engine. However it might be sensible to also consider the option of simply parting out your 03, as it may be a cheaper, quicker and less stressful option to then use the money to track down another bike in good running order.

    The ECU for your 03 is not the same as 06 to 09 the different is Vtech actuation at RPM. You might get lucky if you can switch the ECU and the motor if all connector are the same.

    VTEC valve actuation

    The VFR800 was the first non-JDM motorcycle to use VTEC valve-gear. Honda used VTEC to meet tightening noise and emissions standards and to increase the peak engine horsepower. Based on the VTEC-E system, the simplified motorcycle version of VTEC employs only two of the four valves per cylinder when operating at lower engine speeds. All four valves per cylinder are engaged above approximately 6,800 rpm. This is initiated by an electronically actuated oil spool valve, which send oil pressure to the lifter actuators, which then move the engagement pins into place above the valve stem, allowing the remaining two valves to open. This design allows for variable valve timing as well, since the cam lobe profiles can be made different. After much criticism of the abruptness of power transition, Honda lowered the VTEC activation rpm threshold to 6,400 rpm in 2006. The VTEC disengages two cylinder valves when the engine speed drops again below 6,100 rpm.
