Replacing 170 rear with a 180 on 4th Gen

Hello Group,
Is it ok to replace rear tire from a 170/60 to a 180 on a 4th Gen? Sales Rep at Honda shop rides a 3rd Gen he went from a 170 to a 180 with no problems. Will this be ok for a 4th Gen. I'm looking to replace the BT020 with the Pwr 2CT. Should I stay with the 170?

I don't see that there would be a problem, just have to be careful of clearance issues. One other thing that may happen is that with the wider tire is that the turn in may be a litle slower than it was with the 170.

Wouldn't be prudent at this time.

4th gen rear wheel is 5" wide and a 180 is USUALLY too wide for 5". 3rd and 5th-6th gens run 5.5" wide.

Beat me to it by about 7 minutes.

 

I believe handling would be compromised with a 180 on the rear.

 

I'm with safety and VT, stay with the 170 on your 4th gen.

I just switched back to a 170 on the 97.

Unless you swap out your rear mag for a 5.5, I'd stay with the 170.

With a 180 on a 5" rim you can compromise the tyres profile & performance.:wink:

 

Thank you guys for your replies. Not only have you answered my concerns, but you've helped me to save a few $$$:biggrin: by going with the 170's over the 180's. scared to ask, but any opinon's on the Pilots Pwr 2CT's vs B021?

I have zero first hand experience with either of those tires, however after lots of research, I am putting Pilot Road 2's on my 4th gen, once they come in stock. Seem like a perfect tire......for me.

 

I am running the Pilot Pwr 2ct on the front but like you see they only make 180, and 190's for the rear in the 2ct. I would run the 2ct on the front with the 170 regular Pilot Pwrs on the rear....I sure wouldn't want to jeapordize the integrity of the ride just to have the "hottest" tire out there at the time....just my .02, keep the change

 

I think i'll look into the 2ct up front with the 170 Pilot pwrs as nunyadamnbiz suggested. If i can't get that combo, will look into the B21's. Want to let powderrecon that Cyclegear has the Pilot Road 2 in stock. Again tks All

 

Yeah thats what I am running right now, and I love em...sticky as all get up....if you don't order them online a Cycle Gear is the next best thing...great prices on tires....have fun and keep those on the ground...well at least one of them

Darn... Guess You guys answered my questions, well almost. I wanted to do the same thing. A friend just gave me a rear tire with only about 700 miles on it, and I wanted to use it to save some $$$ it is a 180/55 ZR17 my 4th gen has a 170/60 ZR17 so what is the main concern to not do it???

I'm running a 180/55 R17 on my gen3. It came that way when I purchased it. Am I ok running this tire or should I think about swapping it out?

Well I ended up getting the BT021's front and back. I've got about 300mi on them so far. First impression is a much smoother ride, better grip with the dual compound on rear. Hope there isn't the cupping issues up front like with the 020's, at least the thread pattern has been changed. Will get back after some more miles.

You can put any tire you want on the rear 5" wide wheel, but what we're attempting to tell you is that the 180 tire is NOT made to fit a 5" wide wheel.
