Looking to remove the engine from my 86 VF500. I've read the Clymer manual and it seems there's a lot of extra stuff they tell you to do in order to pull the engine. I know there's some obvious things like water hoses and electrical connections but what about things like carbs and exhaust? What absolutely needs to come off before the engine can be removed?

Also - looking for a good running engine. I'm in SoCal but don't mind traveling a couple of hours to get one. Anybody have one?

Most everything that needs to be removed is pretty obvious.....except for the right side case cover. I could not twist the engine out of the frame until the cover was removed.

Why sweat removing it without a good replacement? Do what's usually done: list it on CL, say it only needs a new battery to run great and you had it running last season, sell for $400-$500 and pass the problems on to an inexperienced, optomistic dreamer. There must be hundreds of VF500s out there that won't ever run, get sold cheap, get abandoned, get sold to another guy who'll never get it running, and so it goes. She looks good, but she seldom gives you a good ride and wants to steal your money, a young man's heartbreaker.

Think about it, Bunky! Most of the still-good engines are rare and few and married to their owners. What you'd buy online or from a salvage yard is unlikely to be in any better condition than the boat anchor you already have. Hundreds of VF500 engines are still around but few run and fewer run right.

Dey mosely be done woe-out ya know is why CL is yo friend and lotsa parts can't be found new and don't use used parts in engines.

Since you haven't posted any pics, I will assume you have a nice bike, so if the engine is toast, why not do a frankenviffer & swap in a newer gen motor?

    Just a random thought.

The bike condition is about average but it is complete and the plastics are intact. I've been thinking about some sort of cool swap but haven't had the time to figure out what fits.

If it was easy to change engines I think it would have done. I don't recall seeing or hearing about many other engines transplanted into a VF500 frame. There is a picture of a Kawasaki tripe 2 stroke floating around so it can be done but I'd say you need to be skilled and have access to machine tools to do it well.
Your engine might be crap but if you buy another then with it's likely with two you can cannibalise and get one good out of the pair (or maybe three..). It is all part of the fun of VF ownership. When you have a good one it's a great bike to ride.
