From what I've read here, it seems like once you have the regulator/rectifier frying problem, you have to replace the regulator/rectifier, stator, wiring, and maybe the battery to start fresh, and then you'll want a custom fan for the new r/r too. Even then it doesn't sound like the problem is always solved. What a pain!

I'm thinking of getting either a 2000 (because of the gear driven cam engine)or a 2006 VFR, but I sure don't want to inherit that kind of a problem!

Does anyone know what years does the r/r & stator & wiring problems affect?

Honda has updated the stator and regulator for the VFR so they dont fry ..The wiring problems still plague the 6th gen as there is even a long thread about it at www.VFRdiscussion.com . Ground wires melting / connectors melting ..Honda neeeds a new electrical wiring tech.

I bought a 98 not knowing about the charging probs. I have replaced the RR once and am still having probs. I have used Electrosport's flowchart and everything and still can't pinpoint the problem. I have finally given up and am taking it to a Honda tech. $65 for a diagnostic to figure out what is wrong. This better f'ing work!!

Well, the r/r's DO go out in them but I don't think I've ever heard of a bad stator. I just replaced the r/r and battery on my '94; the stator tested fine. You can test most of the charging system yourself with a multimeter: the r/r is the only part you should have tested by the dealer as they use two specific ohmmeters to do so.

I didn't feel like paying the dealer $230 for a new r/r so I got mine from GDL Cycles in Florida for $120. Also I bought my battery at Sears; the replacement was the exact same one I'd buy from the dealer. Made by Yuasa, fitted with a DieHard sticker and $20 less.
