Every time something goes wrong I always in the back of my mind thing about the reg/rect.

Should I just do the rewire mod on my 94.... Would it really help things if it is working right?

Are there any drawbacks to doing it?

Save yourself the inevitable headache and just upgrade the OEM R/R and wiring harness. R/R failure is very common with these bikes and I would not want to risk failure out in the middle of nowhere. Both my 93's had R/R issues and so did my buddy's 96 model. Why take a chance??

I think mine has gone bad. I'm searching for all of the threads now. I have started a new thread too. So much fun. I am going to just replace it, even if I come to find it's not bad. It'll be good peace of mind.

Good idea to fix it before any problems occur. If your current R/R is working, bag it and carry it as a spare. To justify the cost of fixing it now, figure out how much it can cost you to get stuck in the middle of nowhere on say a Sunday.

Also keep in mind that it is just as important to replace the wiring harness as it is the replace the R/R itself. The plastic connectors from the R/R to the main wiring harness behind the right mid fairing are very prone to melting/burning because the existing wiring is not adequate which creates too much resistance. I replaced the R/R on my bike but failed to swap out the harness which eventually burned up last week with only 12k miles on the bike. I'm only glad I caught it before I left for a trip to the North Carolina mountains the following week. The ironic thing is that I already had an upgraded wiring harness sitting in my toolbox for the last 6 months and kept putting off installing it until I was "motivated" by being stranded at work with my bike.

if you just contact wiremybike.com, that guy can hook you up and you'll have peace of mind. many, many vfrw members have used him and I don't think I've seen one negative comment. I personally modded mine to use the R/R from a yammy R1 and he (the guy from wiremybike) offerred to make me a special cable that would plug in to the VFR harness on one side and the R1 plug at the R/R. Seems like an upfront dude.

Looks like a good deal, except the parts are back ordered for three to four weeks. I may have to find some alternatives. I still haven't done the tests to diagnose my problem yet. Off to the garage now to get dirty.

Well, I never did buy the stuff from the guy. Here's what I ended up doing cause I was in a hurry: http://vfrworld.com/forums/mechanics-garage/30845-making-yamaha-r1-regulator-work-5th-gen-vfr-how.html

I keep meaning to finish it up by buying his kit, but if you look at the kit, you'll see that you can do it all yourself. He just put's it all together for you in a nice little package.
