Hey guys I'm painting my rims tomorrow. Can any of you reccommed a good paint to use? I know a general type will work but I want to use something that will resist chain oil. Going to clear coat the hell out of em but a good paint is still worth it just incase I get a scratch and oil seeps through.

If you can get the proper color refrigerator paint in spray cans, its very hard.

If you clear coat paint, just be sure to let it harden for about 2 weeks to reach maximum strength, and than 2 coats of polish for grease resistance.

Of course, powder coat seems the best.

Actually I think a good anodizing and clear coat seal are best.

Actually used the DuplicColor Rim & Wheel paint on Kristin gen3 wheels. They were the 92 silver gunmetal. Lots of sanding little places and cleaning all oils off the rim to get it to stick right. Holds up very well.

I like the Rustoleum Hammer paint, they have a few colors, black and gunmetal gray both are very nice. If you have not used the hammer paints before they are neat because they don't require primer and they cover imperfections very nice. You can get them at Walmart.
Check out my website at Honda VFR Twilight Zone pinball for pictures of black wheels I painted on my wife's VFR. Be sure to clean, clean and clean some more before you paint.

I'll look into it, I'm going back white on my rims was always jealous of GSXR guys with white rims so I plan on having my own. One of the harley guys at work was giving me crap about keeping them clean and how big of a pain it was going to be, I quickly reminded him that all I have to keep clean is rims and as long as it isnt chrome I can spray, wipe, and roll and dont have to worry about planing my rides around my bike cleanings. Also guys with white rims can get a lil slack cause if we roll up on the set and your rims are a lil spotty then its no big deal but ride to the bar on a dirty harley and see what happens.

Powdercoating IMO is your best bet.

Rattlecan paint is your worst bet.

Good prep is your best friend.

Not buying a book on automotive type painting will be your worst enemy.

Going rate in Sacramento is $150 to powder coat the pair , factor in your time and cost to paint yourself it really is a good deal.

Painting = PITA and results only as good as your prep and paint skills.

Powder Coating = Not a PITA and Better Results from a professional.

just had mine done, and I'm really happy I went with the PC. Now... If Toe Cutter would just give me that white 8 spoke!

I used Duplicolor, sanded the wheel, cleaned thoroughly, covered up the tyre really well, and sprayed. The paint as held up very well. Will be doing front soon. The Duplicolor rattle can comes with a nozzle that rotates to change spray angle.

I went to a mom and pop ace hardware store looking for steel screws to replace those soft ass copper screws in the carbs. While there I asked him about paint to use on motorcycle rims and I hit pay dirt. This guy and his wife are bikers and when I say biker I mean look in the dictionary and the word biker their picture may be there. They shut down their store for most of the summer into the fall because they ride from Cali to bike week in Tampa and about 15 other rallies in between and the Mrs. had to make it known she rides her own bike. Anyway they have been riding since the 60's and he's the mechanic for their club so when he's not in the store he's in the garage. Well anyway this guys knows his stuff. He told me to paint my rims with Rustoleum appliance epoxy paint. I read the can and he was like I know it says for indoor appliances but you can paint the stove with it and it holds up to that heat so what a bike puts out will be like a blow dryer compared to that. Plus once it dries the finish will be a solid coating like a refridge real smooth and best of all oil and dirt will just wipe right off no cleaner needed. Best kept secret in motorcycling in his opinion. Anyway I thought it was worth a try and if it dont work out there's a powder coat machine in the support equipment shop at work and I'll just have those guys strip em and powder coat em. The reason I havent powder coated them already is my buddy rides a GXR1000 and I did his rims and they came out very nice so I think I can do mine.

Also he had me get this Super Clean Degreaser to prep them with, OMG it eats oil on contact so basically spray on and wipe off but these things are so caked with oil I had to use a tooth brush so it's taking me a xtra day to get em ready for paint. The funny thing is my wife was pissed. She said you can spend 3 hours scrubbing those damn rims with a tooth brush but I cant your ass to wipe hair off the sink after you shave. I told her I know if I leave the hair there long enough I know she will clean it up but it will be a cold day in hell before she scrubs my rims. Needless to say I'm eating cereal for dinner tonight.

Can anyone proovide advice on what to do with the black rims that come on the 95 Red VFR? I hate them, I would prefer a polished Alum look. Can they be blasted or am I better off trying to buy new ones? If so where?

Thanks in advance for your help (1st time poster)

Kingpuck I saw that color paint today at wal-mart was recommended for your on wheels, rustoleum brand. If you have any experience painting you can always try to do them yourself and if hte job goes south then have them done by someone else. Your bike is a 95 so the option of having someone do it may work for you but I want to do as much of my bike as I can myself so my 1st answer will always be try to do it yourself.
