Last year I picked up a 1985 VF1000R for $400, and with a lot of work and a few dollars have a bike I really enjoy riding. It had suffered a minor drop, and then was not driven for several years. One of the bigest jobs was cleaning all the crud out of the tank and carbs. I replaced all of the fluids, did a complete tuneup, installed new tires, chain, sprockets, seat cover and battery, cleaned it up and gave it a new paint job. It works really well except when starting it in colder weather. Then it only runs on three cylinders until it has warmed up a little and I turn the choke down. When I back the choke off the fourth cylinder picks up. I am wondering if it the choke is putting too much gas into that cylinder and flooding it. I checked the fuel pump and it is actually putting out more than the specs say it should. Once all four cylinders are running it runs smoothly. I also had to do some repairs on the fairing and plastic. After initially wanting to paint it the original colors I decided to give it a metallic black base coat, clear coat. This was much easier, cheaper and faster as I was getting very anxious to finish working on it and drive it! I love the look of it now. I would like to replace the stock mufflers. One side has some minor scratches on it, and I would love to hear a louder growl and see how less backpressure affects performance. Any suggestions on replacement mufflers and maybe a carb mod to go with it?
