rearset compatability question (since I've majorly bent up my left rear-set in the accident wednesday):

However, what's the distance between the bolts that hold the brackets to the frame? and the rear master to the bracket?

    my thoughts:

The VFR rearsets look surprisingly similar between the 2nd and 4th gen bikes. There are plenty of rearset options for 4th gen bikes, none for the second gens.

The bolts are the same (per the fiche).

I know the engine casing are nearly identical over the years, so the shift linkage should be about the same (and appears so in the fiche). The rear brake is likely to be the big difference.

I've priced out parts, and $$$ for the stockers.

If the peg is shot, I can get a good pair of aftermarket ones for less then the stock left one only.

If the bracket is shot (I'm going to heat and bend it back, first), I'm going to consider rearsets vs. a new bracket. Although rearsets are a bit more. But adjustability would be nice.

Just pegs or the whole rearset?

I can pick up LSL pegs (both sides, both peg itself and fold-up bracket) for less than a single stock peg.

But if the rear set bracket itself is unrepairable, it's going to be a fair bit more to get stuff replaced, and I'll need to look at and compare going with oem parts or aftermarket.

There's nothing aftermarket that claims to fit the 86 bikes, but if things didn't change much between '86 and '90, with regards to the rearsets, then a rearset might be made to fit.

Actually, I just found that Raask makes a rearset for the '86 gen bikes:

Found them online from the UK for £120. Shipping would probably make that over $250 or so. Not bad, but they don't look anywhere near as nice as Sato, Woodcraft or LSL units do.

Ok, nevermind on the interchangeability between the 2nd and 3rd gen bike rearsets.

the '86s use an 8x28 and 10x30 bolt, the later models just use a pair of 8x28 bolts. The 10x30 is used to also mount the rear subframe into place.

Well, it's straighten the bent one (with lots of heat) or it's replacement time.

The frame of the 86 is asymetrical so even if the rear sets bolt on they will not be the same from side to side. I found this out after I bought a set of rc51 rearsets for my 87vfr.
