Been stripping the bike today, ie fork removal in preparation for a custom rebuild. Got forks out easily. Started on the rear shock but struck a problem on the bottom bolt that holds the lever to the frame. Got the triangular plate off OK but the last bolt has a recessed head on the one side and a nut the other. Got the nut off OK but the recessed head side is solid. Does it screw out or do i drift it out from the other side? Scared to welly it, knowing my luck will break it. When i get it off how do you get the shocker out? Seems awful tight as the exhaust appears to be in the way. Am replacing with a Wilbers 641 unit. Can post some photos tomorrow if that helps.
Remove the rear wheel and get a jack or some other support for the swingarm. Basically you'll have to raise and lower the swingarm to allow the shock to wiggle out. You'll have to hold the swingarm in certain raised/lower positions to be the shock out. Same process for installing new shock. If that doesn't work you, you can always remove the headers but that to me would be more work than needed. As far as the bolt, should be able to tap it out, if it's the bolt I'm thinking of. If your new shock has a remote reservoir, make sure you get that through the swingarm before you get the shock through.
Was worried about taking the headers off, thats a lot of work! Gonna get some Allen headed sockets tomorrow to get more purchase on that bolt as an Allen key and ring spanner through it gives too much flex. The Wilbers has got a remote so will take heed of your advice. Thanks
